Summary

Petroleum and petroleum products contain a certain amount of acidic substances, including inorganic acids, organic acids, esters, phenolic compounds, lactones, heavy metal salts, amine salts and other weak base salts, acid salts of polybasic acids and various additives. These include acidic substances contained in petroleum, acidic substances produced during the production and storage of petroleum products, and acidic substances brought in by some additives. The amount of acidic substances contained in petroleum products varies with the degree of oil refining. The lower the degree of refinement of petroleum products, the more acidic substances they contain. The organic acids contained in petroleum products can corrode metals, the smaller the molecule of organic acids, the more corrosive, especially lead and zinc will be corroded to form soaps. Aggregation of the resulting soaps can lead to deposits that affect the storage and use of petroleum products. When the content of organic acids in petroleum products is high and moisture is present, the corrosion to metals is significantly increased. Acid value is often used in petroleum product indicators, but there is no quantitative relationship between acid value and corrosiveness of petroleum products.
