MRBP大小鼠的主要特色
血压实验需要提高受测体周围环境的温度。理论上较高温度时测量血压的效果很好。我们可以通过控制鼠尾的血量来控制大小鼠的体温。当体温高于正常值时流经鼠尾的血液就会散掉多余的热量。体温越高流经鼠尾的血液就越多。研究发现加热大鼠的温度高于32摄氏度、小鼠温度高于34摄氏度时会产生热应力动物的热量就会损失一部分。这就影响了真正的血压值（改变了差不多+/-12-28 mmHg）
检测脉冲的形式非常重要而传感器的选择决定了制作工艺。压电传感器多年来被广泛应用于麦克风和触碰开关。其原理是对传感器施加外力后产生电信号。但用这种传感器作为检测脉冲会有一系列的问题和缺陷进行血压测量时有较高的温度需求（36-40℃）。
用晶体做的脉冲探测器也会出现一些问题和缺陷进行鼠类的血压测量时所需要的温度高于热力学水平温度（36-40℃）而且加热尾部是基于“尾部脉搏是局部加热的结果"这一错误的假设。
1978年IITC发明了光电传感器它将光和图片传感器用于脉搏的测量。当血流通过尾部尾部血管直径的改变导致了光量得改变直接导致光电量的变化。IITC原件的设计（感应电子设备和咬合袖带）不会像其他仪器一样会对鼠尾产生机械性的作用力同时如果需要可以精确地切断传感器。光电传感器可以在封闭的室温下进行检测事实上许多使用本产品发表过的论文中小鼠的起测温度要低于28℃大鼠甚至更低。
与其他的高温法相比
鼠类和其他动物一样有一个内在的调节机制我们称为“温度调节"。正常的环境温度大概在26-27℃如果环境温度高于正常温度（28-30℃）“温度调节"开始增加血液流量。这样会导致尾部会有更多的血液流量由于尾部是身体的一部分而并不是简单的皮革的覆盖所以会自行降温以求尽快散热。这就是间接测量血压的原理。
MRBP大小鼠的不同在于脉搏探测器上。它能在26℃或者更低的温度下进行测量。而其他脉搏探测器由于不够敏感就会要求更高的温度。温度过高会使动物死亡的风险大大增加。
